Schools in poor and rural areas of Western China lack basic teaching equipment. Due to extreme poverty, lots of village-level schools can barely purchase enough paper and chalk, let alone new books and laboratory equipment.
In 2008, the General Mills Foundation and General Mills China donated nearly RMB500,000 to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation to build the "Häagen-Dazs Love Library" for primary and secondary schools in the earthquake-affected areas in Sichuan province, and in the extremely poor regions of Ningxia province.
In March 2009, General Mills China employees donated 35 cases of new books and stationery valued at more than RMB10,000 to provide local children with more reading materials and study tools.
In May 2009, the love libraries were ready, and our employees' donations had been delivered to the children in Sichuan province.
Häagen-Dazs Computer Classrooms for Children's Welfare Homes
The Orphan Care Project was launched by the China Charity Federation in 2000. The Charity Computer Classroom Program is an important part of this project, aiming at providing millions of orphans the opportunity to use computers and learn how to eventually make a better living with computer skills.
General Mills donated $75,000 in April 2007 and over RMB50,000 in May 2008 to the China Charity Federation to establish the "Häagen-Dazs Computer Classrooms" in six children's welfare homes and schools in Tibet, Henan and Qinghai.
These classrooms were completed as of February 2009. Now, they help the orphans in these extremely poor areas advance skill through the use of computers.
Caring for Special Children
Häagen-Dazs, the first super-premium ice cream brand, has responded to the call for the care for special children in China.
In 2006, Häagen-Dazs, together with the China Charity Federation and Shenzhen Charity Federation, established the "Häagen-Dazs Loving Bear Fund" for the Shenzhen Yuanping Special Education School, and donated RMB100,000 to help the students advance their education and improve their living conditions.
In addition, we donated another RMB100,000 for the Häagen-Dazs Scholarship, which rewards outstanding students.
Häagen-Dazs employees have also volunteered to visit the Children's Welfare Home in Shanghai to deliver Children's Day gifts to the special children there and spend a holiday with them.
